The Boys

by Michael Harnett

Adapted for stage by Michael Harnett

Following a sell out 2 week run in Novemeber 2015 at Smock Alley Boys’ School, Michael Harnett’s novel turn play returns – back by popular demand!

Set in Drumcondra and adapted from the novel of the same name, The Boys is the story of a group of teenage boys coming to terms with the time and place in which they find themselves.

It’s the summer of 1968 and The Boys are ready for the world – at least some of them are. What can stop them now? But before the Summer holidays are over, life will have utterly changed. Nothing will be the same again.

4 Actors take on the roles of over 25 characters, which gives the piece a relentless comedic pace, with moments of bittersweet resolve as we see the characters move from their tight knit young world of The Boys into manhood.

Full of inventive energy and fun, The Boys is both a hilarious story of growing up and a moving portrayal of moving on. Directed by Tracy Ryan, the action is frenetically paced where the scene and character changes happen in a flash.

This show contains strong language and is recommended for audiences of 14+

Reviews of the book:

With echoes of Frank O’Connor it’s very sharp, very humorous and lyrical and very well written. Definitely worth checking out.” – Arena, RTE Radio 1

A charming and sensitive story. A particularly well written and finely observed account of a Dublin working-class boyhood.” – The Irish Times

A very filmic portrayal of life where the scenes involving the relationship between a son and his father are particularly moving and poignant.” – President Michael D. Higgins

Stage show:

"... It’s very sharp, very humorous and lyrical and very well written. Definitely worth checking out.” – Arena, RTE Radio 1

“A charming and sensitive story. A particularly well written and finely observed account of a Dublin working-class boyhood.” – The Irish Times.

“The Boys is a recognisable, sometimes all-too real, tale of growing up, with all of its antics, heartaches and changes that will have a laugh and a tear competing in your throat.” – Sitting on the Fourth Wall

“Harnett’s writing exceeds excellence as his presentation of the boys’ experiences are universal, relatable particularly to Irish audiences of all ages. For this reason, I could not recommend The Boys enough.” – Le Cool, Dublin
